Solar instead of diesel: our fundraising campaign has launched!

We are planning a solar power system with battery storage for the Chiuno Cultural Center. It will primarily provide a reliable power supply for the school and the new vocational training workshop. The alternative would be a diesel generator, but diesel in Malawi currently costs almost three euros per litre, more than anywhere else in Africa. Solar power, on the other hand, is climate-friendly, cheap to run and makes the center independent.

Starting today, we are raising €18,000 on betterplace.org for solar panels, inverters, battery storage, mounting and wages for local craftspeople. We are also planning to apply for additional funding, for which the donations could serve as our own contribution. This would allow us to build an even larger system. If the funding does not come through, we will use the donations to build a first stage of the system. Construction is planned for the first half of 2027.
