Two village wells and an Education Centre in Malawi

Two village wells and an Education Centre in Malawi

In 2018, we started a new project in Malawi. We have built two wells there and are now following the wish of the village community to gradually build a culture and education centre. Our goal is to counteract widespread child labour on the tobacco plantations and to give girls in particular the support they need to enable them to get an education.

Project Phase One: Construction of Two Wells

Project Phase One: Construction of Two Wells

One of the wells was built in the middle of the village, the second was built on the edge of the village where a better water source was found. However, due to the stony soil, manual labor, and rudimentary tools, the work took some time. The on-site project coordination is led by the village's newly founded community water committee and our local representative. In the meantime, a CBO (Community Based Organisation) has been founded in the village, which corresponds to a non-profit association. YOOW has signed a cooperation agreement with the Chiuno-CBO.

Project Phase Two: Establishment of a Culture & Education Centre

Project Phase Two: Establishment of a Culture & Education Centre

The village community would like to have a kindergarten and a school as well as educational opportunities, especially for women, to set up their own businesses. We support this plan. With the aforementioned training rooms and workshops, a canteen (kitchen) for processing home-grown fruit and vegetables is also to be built. Young parents are to be trained in order to avoid malnutrition, which is very common amongst the local children. YOOW has already set up a soup kitchen for children as a first step towards conscious nutrition. A doctor's office is to provide medical care on site. The cultural and educational centre will be a place of work and experience to find a career and life path for oneself and to offfer support for the community's everyday problems.

Our partner organization: The Chiuno-CBO

Was registered in September 2018. Thus, the conditions for a cooperation agreement were met, i.e. our cooperation is eligible for funding.

On the jointly acquired land (owned by the CBO) a cultural centre consisting of a kindergarten, a school, training workshops, especially for women starting up their own businesses, a senior citizens' meeting place and a canteen where healthy food (partly from our own cultivation) is taught and offered. In addition, a medical centre will also provide medical care for the neighbouring villages of Chiuno Village.

The Chiuno Cultural Center will offer a work and experience space to enable children, especially girls, to receive an education and to reduce the still existing child labor on the tobacco plantations in Kasungu in a sustainable way.
