Our current project in Malawi

The people behind the project

Together with our local partner organization Chiuno NGO, YOOW e.V. provides targeted support to the Chiuno community with the construction of a center for education, income generation, and community engagement. YOOW e.V. is also involved in “Malawi NGOs,” a Germany-wide network of actors in development cooperation in Malawi.

The situation on site

There is no electricity or running water in Chiuno Village.
The people live off subsistence farming, with only one harvest possible per year: after the rainy season. Farmland therefore remains unused for most of the year due to a lack of water. Day labor means that fathers often have to work away from home and are therefore rarely there for their families. Periods of hunger are a regular occurrence.

The location of the Chiuno Cultural Center

Our five key topics in Malawi

YOOW e.V. is committed to the principle of “helping people help themselves”:
We work together with our local partner organisation to improve living conditions in the long term and ensure the long-term maintenance of the facilities. The focus is on personal responsibility, environmental awareness, and resource conservation.

The construction of a medical center will enable basic medical care to be provided in the region.

The construction of wells and wastewater treatment facilities, the planting of crops on the land, and targeted agricultural training are laying the foundations for greater food security and healthy nutrition. This will enable the community to ensure its own food supply and generate additional income by selling surplus crops.

YOOW e.V. is committed to equal educational opportunities, regardless of gender and other factors. In particular, it promotes the advancement of girls and women by supporting craft and training initiatives that enable them to build their own livelihoods.

The construction of a kindergarten and a primary school has already improved the educational infrastructure. The construction of a training workshop will further strengthen this goal.

The measures taken by YOOW e.V. thus contribute to the implementation of the global sustainability goals, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
